Kicking off

Right, so here goes my first post. It’s not even the first, really, because I have deleted two old ones I had written a couple of months back, before abandoning the project altogether to open another blog in Blogger.

I’m still very much a Blogger person but I kind of like trying new blog hosts to see what they have to offer, how they differ from each other, what they have in common. This hands-on is actually very important as it helps me to choose the best platform to work with in different situations, blogging alone or with my students.

Last year I tried Multiply, which is really much more than a blog, and it was really fun. The problem was that sometimes, for no apparent reason, a post would take forever to load, and broadband connection has made me very impatient with slow-loading pages…

This time I first tried Edublogs, a host I hadn’t used yet. I signed up and they promised they would send a password to my email address, which never happened. I tried to sign up again (perhaps they hadn’t really registered it the first time?) but the message said the email and username had already been taken. Of course they had, it’s just that I couldn’t access them!

So it was back to WordPress. I know a lot of people who are huge fans, so I thought I should bring Tangram back to life. I guess it’s going to be a blog about creating a blog…

In case you’re curious about my other blogs (yes, I’m afraid it’s quite addictive), here’s the list:

Project Platypus - the blog I keep with/for my students

Movie Reviews - part of my master’s project

Tangram - the twin blog, where I post bits and pieces which, hopefully, will make sense when seen together… :-)

    Dear Mônica,

You said “This time I first tried Edublogs, a host I hadn’t used yet. I signed up and they promised they would send a password to my email address, which never happened.” Did you try your spam box? I’m sure the edublogs email is there!

Don’t forget to TAG your post “blogging4educators”.

Hi Carla, I did and there was nothing there… I guess it must have been one of those virtual black holes we sometimes find in cyberspace! :-)

Thanks for the reminder, I’ll add the tag!

Great start, Monica. It is always a challenge to find out how a new tool works. I am also a big fan of Blogger, especially because students new to blogs find it very easy to work it out. However, last year I started one at WordPress in the Openweb publishing EVO session with Bee, Graham and Patricia. I found out it can hold static web pages in the form of tabs which is a quite convenient feature at times. It drove me mad when I could not add html to embed certain devices but this might have improved since then. Like everything in life, I guess it is a matter of getting used to it.
    All the best, Berta

Dear Berta, this is so true! In fact I love trying out these new tools. It’s a pity we don’t have more free time to explore them more extensively -thank goodness we at least have the EVO sessions for that! :-)

My students find Blogger easier to use but it’s great to have different blog hosts offering different services. Sometimes I feel like I need a GPS to help me find my way around here but I’m sure it’s just a matter of time (and perhaps a great deal of patience!) to get things running the way I want. It’s been a lot of fun and I hope some of my comments will help others when they need to take the same road.

Thanks for dropping by, always a pleasure to ‘read’ you! :-)

    Dear Monica,

You started this blog for everyone to learn about this platform. That’s right. While learning and figuring out how it works you will help others to find it being very good for blogging.
I used to use blogger, but am trying to learn about other platforms (there are lots of them in the Internet). I’ll be happy to learn wordpress together with you.

Thanks a lot for the newborn blog.

    Hugs,
    Nina

    Hi Nina!

Thank you for visiting my baby blog! I heard so many nice things about WordPress that I decided it was about time I created a blog here!

Every time I tried to do that in the past, I gave up because I was already so used to Blogger! And since time is a rare commodity nowadays, I would end up going back to ’safe territory’… This session was really what I needed to finally give it a try!

    Um abraço,
    Monica

Love the blog + the tanagram figures. You have inspired me to keep experimenting with my own forays into blogging….
    See you in the blogosphere!

    Hi Monica,
It is great to experience with various blog hosts, isn’t it? I am also a Blogger person, but during this year’s EVO sessions, I have started experimenting with WordPress as well. By the way, I love your other blogs so much, so I’m sure this one is going to end up inspiring other teachers as well!

    Hi Gina,

experimenting is exactly one of the best parts of opening a blog! I remember the first time I managed to embed a podcast widget on my students’ blog, I was so excited I almost started dancing around the room! Too bad it was 2 a.m. and there was nobody awake at home to celebrate the big occasion with me! :-)

    See you in the blogosphere!
    Um abraço!

    Hi Mary,

thank you for visiting my new baby blog and following what I do on the others! I’m so glad you like them!

Great to know you are exploring WordPress too, I can get really lost around here sometimes! :-)

    Um abraço!
